May News.

Posted by Soroptimist International Southport on May 28, 2008 5:06 PM

New President, Margaret Davies, was installed on April 27th at our 76th Charter year Luncheon at Formby Hall Golf Club and Spa. The following evening Margaret hosted a 'new President's' party at Baverstock House. We enjoyed a delicious buffet, drinks and lots of chat! Margaret then outlined some of her aspirations and plans for her year. She has decided that 'The Homeless' will be our main, local charitable focus, therefore her choice of Speakers, at Speaker Meetings, will reflect this.
So on May 6th we were pleased to have as our guest Speaker, Greta Morphet, from the charity 'Light for Life'. Greta gave a very interesting talk on homelessness in the Southport area.
She explained that 'homeless' did not necessarily mean 'roofless' and that many people practised 'couch surfing' form one friend's couch to another. She outlined how her charity works with the local authority and other government bodies to bring about positive outcomes for those in her care. She explained that attracting funding and retaining it could be particularly problematical. After some probing questions from our members Margaret thanked Greta and presented her with a small gift.

April News.

Posted by Soroptimist International Southport on April 28, 2008 5:00 PM

We have enjoyed two major events this month. The first was our annual 'Three Clubs Meeting' on April 16th. This year it was Southport Soroptimists turn to host the event for our sister clubs in Bootle and Crosby. We decided to hold a Murder Mystery Evening at The Waterside Lodge by The Marine Lake. Several Southport Soroptimists took to the stage to perform a short play called 'All Afloat' set in the 1920's on board a liner leaving Liverpool destination New York.
The play described as a 'tale of spurned love and cowardice' took our audience on an exciting voyage as they tried to guess the identity of the murderer and how the dastardly deed had been carried out. Cast and audience then enjoyed a superb buffet meal after which characters were cross questioned in a bid to solve the mystery. A prize was then awarded to the winning table of super sleuths who just happened to belong to SI Southport!

March News.

Posted by Soroptimist International Southport on March 26, 2008 10:08 AM

One of our main on-going projects in Southport is the provision of support for vulnerable students at KGV College. On March 3rd Hilary Anslow gave us a very informative talk about the hardships suffered by some of the children in her care. We were shocked to hear about the conditions a minority of students have to endure to enable them to receive higher education. She praised the fact that Southport Soroptimists provided not just money but also practical items such as bedding and kitchen equipment. We, therefore, decided to hold a sponsored walk to add to the general fund to help students through a difficult period in their lives.
So on Sunday March 16th several Soroptimists and friends gathered at Fir Tree Farm near Crank to walk the walk! A variety of walks were on offer varying from one to six miles - most of us completed the latter. After an enjoyable walk, which included some fantastic views, we all returned to Fir Tree Farm for Sunday Lunch. Now all we have to do is collect in the sponsorship money and present it to Hilary possibly on our Cheque Presentation Evening on March 31st.

January/February News

Posted by Soroptimist International Southport on February 10, 2008 2:25 PM

During the early part of January we began planning a list of events to take us through to April when Christine Rostron steps down as President.
On January 7th, at our Speaker Meeting, Professor Fraser gave a fascinating talk entitled 'What's new in Osteoporosis'.He highlighted new treatments and ways of caring for our bones.
February 4th then saw our Programme Action Committee hosting the Speaker meeting. The speaker was the Director of Public Health. So after a hot meal - hotpot, chicken casserole or quiche followed by desert - we were given some valuable insights into the work of the Public Health Department. The Director then faced some wide-ranging questions on the role of the Department. We were particularly concerned about teenage drunkeness, drug addiction and the use of sunbeds by those children under 16. All monies raised from the evening are going to Project SIerra - a joint project with 'Hope and Homes for Children'.

December News

Posted by Soroptimist International Southport on December 29, 2007 2:07 PM

After a very busy month of celebrations and fundraising in November, December proved to be a quieter month! Nonetheless we did hold two major functions.
The first was our International Evening held on the 10th December. Over 40 Soroptimists, including our Regional President - Val Moss - attended the meal which had an Italian theme this year. We enjoyed home-made minestrone soup, a selection of Italian meats, cheeses bread and salads, followed by Italian deserts. Naturally this was accompanied by a few glasses of 'vino' and, of course, agua minerale ( I think that is the Italian for it! ).
The evening raised £440 for the International President's appeal - The Hamlin Fistula Relief and Aid Fund in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The second event was our Christmas Celebration at the prestigious Royal Birkdale Golf Club. The evening hosted by, President Christine Rostron, featured a delicious buffet with entertainment. Sixty Soroptimists and guests enjoyed a very sociable, pleasant evening. The appearance of Santa added a seasonal touch especially for those who won raffle prizes.
As the year came to a close President Christine also decided to make a contribution of £200 to the Alchemy Centre who provide dinner and companionship for the needy on Christmas Day.

It only remains for me to wish you all a prosperous and happy New Year.

On 29th October a successful 'Promise Auction' was held in our Clubroom at Baverstock House. Soroptimists and guests, assisted by two celebrity auctioneers - Friar Tuck ( Jean Twedell) and Sister Maria ( Margaret Davies) - engaged in a bidding war for a host of prizes. The evening raised £612 for local charities. The evening was also an opportunity to present Geoff Prest from CHET with a cheque for £2000 raised at the recent Bollywood Ball.
We were also delighted to present a cheque for £811 to past International President Lynn Dunning for her Project Punjab Appeal.Lynn attended Stanley High School's Awards evening to speak about her charity and the pupils then decided to have a mufti day at the beginning of September to raise money for this very worthy cause.
On 10th November Soroptimists and tenants are also holding a lunch to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Baverstock House. This was the second house purhcased by SSHA ( Southport Soroptimist Housing Association) to offer affordable, caring accommodation initially for 'ladies of reduced means'.

Over the summer months Southport Soroptimists have held two popular fund raising events. The first was a 'Chapeaux et Gateaux' lunch on the 24th July at the home of President Christine Rostron. Here Felicity of 'Felicity Hat Hire' gave an informative talk about her business and then we had a great time trying on several gorgeous hats! After tea and gateaux we also had the opportunity to purchase beautiful bags and silky scarves.
The second event on the 25th August was a 'mix and mingle' two course lunch, with wine, also held at the President's home.
The amount raised for both events is in the region of £670 which will go to the President's Charities.
So two very enjoyable events showing what Soroptimists like doing best - socialising, eating and ,of course, raising money for charity!
