On the first meeting of the season the Society enjoyed a very entertaining evening when Nigel Stockill gave us an illustrated talk about the fitness training of the England Cricket Team.
Nigel was one of the team with Duncan Fletcher during that heady summer of 2005 when England gave us all a thrill by beating the Australians. His job was very intense and consisted of planning the fitness and dietry schedule for each individual player and he told us he did this for 7 years, 7 months and 7 days before he resigned from the position. There was very little 'time off' for him, sometimes working over 300 days each year with lots and lots of travel. Some of the fitness schedules he spoke about were extremely taxing and he said that, in general, the players were very dedicated to get themselves fit and in better shape to contend with the rigours of being a professional sports person. Many questions were fired at Nigel who said that he had been privileged to work with the England Team and particularly with Duncan Fletcher.
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 19 November. Alan Oakman will be the speaker. Many of you will remember him as being one of the team selected to play in the 'Laker Test' of 1956. He was also involved with Sussex County Cricket Club for many years and we are looking forward to meeting him.
Why not come along and join us at the Southport and Birkdale Sports Club at 8.00 pm. New members are always welcome. Contact the Secretary on 01704 513580 for more information.
