The last two months have seen Southport Soroptimists involved in several interesting activities. Retaining and recruiting members is a continuing theme through the 'Can do' campaign. So on June 12th Christine Rostron and her Membership Committee held a meeting to flag up some ideas for encouraging new recruits to join us - in fact we now have four or five possible new members!
On July 7th at our 'Speaker Meeting' we were given a very interesting talk by Ken Jones of 'The Lighthouse Project'. He spoke in general about drug users in our local community and, then more specifically, about the Christmas Soup Kitchen. He was disappointed that he could not offer residential facilities to needy peope at this time of year. He appealed to us to let him know if we knew of any individual/organisation could offer such a facility.
On July 12th President Margaret Davies held an Afternoon Tea at her home to raise money for local charities. I Over forty people braved the cold weather to be entertained by the excellent Hesketh Bank Silver Band. Ticket sales, produce stalls, a raffle, donations and a 'guess the weight of the cake' competition helped to raise a fantastic £473!
We have a break from activities in August so I will be back with more news in September.
