New President, Margaret Davies, was installed on April 27th at our 76th Charter year Luncheon at Formby Hall Golf Club and Spa. The following evening Margaret hosted a 'new President's' party at Baverstock House. We enjoyed a delicious buffet, drinks and lots of chat! Margaret then outlined some of her aspirations and plans for her year. She has decided that 'The Homeless' will be our main, local charitable focus, therefore her choice of Speakers, at Speaker Meetings, will reflect this.
So on May 6th we were pleased to have as our guest Speaker, Greta Morphet, from the charity 'Light for Life'. Greta gave a very interesting talk on homelessness in the Southport area.
She explained that 'homeless' did not necessarily mean 'roofless' and that many people practised 'couch surfing' form one friend's couch to another. She outlined how her charity works with the local authority and other government bodies to bring about positive outcomes for those in her care. She explained that attracting funding and retaining it could be particularly problematical. After some probing questions from our members Margaret thanked Greta and presented her with a small gift.
We are also continuing to raise money for Soroptimist International's Quadrennial Project - Project SIerra helping children in one of the poorest countries in the world. To this end a family BBQ was held on May 17th. Despite the dreadful weather an enjoyable time was had by all - especially the children present! A healthy cheque for £365 was subsequently sent off to Project SIerra.
Several Soroptimists also attended the Regional Conference at Daresbury from May 9 - 11th. Here they had the opportunity to listen to various speakers and discuss topics based on the theme 'Health, Wealth and Happiness'.
Talking about being 'healthy' our Bowls Team are keenly preparing for their first match of the season against Leigh Club to be held in early June - full report on this in my next newsletter.
In the meantime ' Good Luck Ladies! '
