April News.

Posted by Soroptimist International Southport on April 28, 2008 5:00 PM |

We have enjoyed two major events this month. The first was our annual 'Three Clubs Meeting' on April 16th. This year it was Southport Soroptimists turn to host the event for our sister clubs in Bootle and Crosby. We decided to hold a Murder Mystery Evening at The Waterside Lodge by The Marine Lake. Several Southport Soroptimists took to the stage to perform a short play called 'All Afloat' set in the 1920's on board a liner leaving Liverpool destination New York.
The play described as a 'tale of spurned love and cowardice' took our audience on an exciting voyage as they tried to guess the identity of the murderer and how the dastardly deed had been carried out. Cast and audience then enjoyed a superb buffet meal after which characters were cross questioned in a bid to solve the mystery. A prize was then awarded to the winning table of super sleuths who just happened to belong to SI Southport!

Our second major event was our 76th Charter Year Luncheon. This was held on April 27th at Formby Hall Golf Club and Spa. Here over 140 Soroptimists and guests were welcomed by President Christine Rostron. The Civic Welcome was then given by The Mayor of Sefton Councillor Richard Hands and the Objects of Soroptimism were read by Mrs Arlene Allen. After grace read by Miss Jean Lee we all enjoyed a three couse lunch followed by coffee and mints.
The meal was followed by The Loyal Toast proposed by Mrs Christine Rostron and the toast to the Guests was proposed by Mrs Gillian Brennan, President SI Liverpool. Lord Fearn then proposed the toast to 'Soroptimist International' and this was responded to by Miss Valerie Moss, President SI South Lancashire.
The guest speaker, Mrs Judith Merry then gave a very enlightening and amusing talk on her work as a broadcaster, producer and writer. The vote of thanks was given by Mrs Carol Cookson. It only remained then for retiring President Christine to install the new President Mrs Margaret Davies. Margaret responded and then gave Christine her 'Past President's Badge.
The afternoon was a great success and everyone was disappointed when it was time to go home!
