Sorotptimists Southport.August news.

Posted by Soroptimist International Southport on July 23, 2007 4:35 PM

Last time I wrote Iasked if you knew the meaning of the word 'soroptimist'.It comes from two Latin words.Soror meaning sister and optima meaning best.So we interpret 'soroptimism' to mean 'the best of women'
Over the last month we have been busy raising funds for local and international charities.
Forthcoming events include:-
Chapeau et Gateaux - afternoon tea and Felicty's Hats - 24th July.
Luncheon for members and guests - August 25th.
International Convention in Glasgow - July 29th to August 2nd.

SKATEBOARDERS GIVEN ABSOLUTE DISCHARGES!

Posted by Southport-Skate-Park-Project on July 20, 2007 11:04 AM

SOUTHPORT-SKATEPARK-PROJECT is saddened to have seen skateboarders taken to court for any reason. We are aware that skaters have been warned on several occasions of the process if they persisted in flouting the anti-skating bye-law. It appears some thought this would never happen.

We are very pleased that in the five cases recently brought to Court the penalties issued to the skaters concerned were lenient and proportionate.

SOUTHPORT-SKATEPARK-PROJECT has a clear policy on the bye-law:

We actively encourage skaters/BMXers not to skate/ride in the designated areas in order to win the support of the Council and members of the public for improved skatepark facilities in the town.

Outside of the designated areas we ask skaters/riders to act sensibly, responsibly, within the law, and with the safety of themselves and members of the public in mind.

To try and avoid other skaters appearing in court in future and in order to fully inform local skaters about the bye-law SSP has posted the full text of the bye-law on the Southport Skateboarders Forum at www.solidsurf.co.uk. In addition to this we have published the main points of the bye law in our Newsletter(available on request) and have also produced leaflets which are available at Arcade Sports.

We also hope that the issues raised from this regarding the quality, design and security of the skatepark will be addressed by the Council and that the Council will contact us at SOUTHPORT-SKATEPARK-PROJECT to work with local skatepark users to provide improved quality skateboard facilities in Southport, such as those being constructed in other towns/cities across the country.

Self Employment Set to Surge as Young People Access Grants

Posted by The Prince's Trust on July 16, 2007 9:23 AM

Since The Prince's Trust launched a new grant scheme to help 18 - 30 year olds become self employed, interest from young people in Southport and the Sefton borough has soared.

Sefton Area Manager, Paul Hunt is delighted that the scheme is providing an opportunity for young unemployed adults to become their own boss without having to get loans to do so.

Paul explained "So far this year Sefton is seeing more young people go into self employment than any other borough of Merseyside. I have been delighted to work with so many enterprising people and hope that we can support even more young people to get their lives working."

Grants of up to £1,200 have been available through The Prince's Trust in this area since June this year anyone in Sefton who wants to find out more can contact The Prince's Trust on 0151 794 3197 or e-mail paul.hunt@princes-trust.org.uk

The Trust still has loans available for young people who need more than £1,200 to set up in business with the new grant scheme offering an alternative rather than additional source of funding.

SKATEPARK TO CLOSE FOR REPAIRS!

Posted by Southport-Skate-Park-Project on July 8, 2007 8:14 PM

Following photographs of the damage at the skatepark being supplied to Sefton Council Leisure Services with last months SSP Newsletter, the skatepark will close from 9th July for re-surfacing of the ramps. The work is expected to take approximately 4 days to complete.

Regular users to the skatepark will have seen the posters about this, attached to both gates.

KR8ER SKATEPARK
NOTICE

This facility will be closed for re-surfacing from the 9th July 07.
The works will take approximately 4 days to complete.

Please Contact:
Parks Repair Line
Tel. no. 0151 934 2394

Although the repair work will prevent use of the skatepark for a short period, it is for the benefit of all skatepark users, until long-term solutions to the skateparks issues are found. The park will of course now be fully available during the Wicked Weekend youth event on August Bank Holiday weekend.

All at Southport-Skatepark-Project would like to thank Leisure Sevices for acting so promptly and ensuring the park is safe and functional again for all skatepark users. We hope to continue to work with the Council for the benefit of skatepark users and non-skatepark users alike.

During the closure of the skatepark SSP encourages skaters to be patient and not skate in areas covered by the ‘anti-skating’ bye-law, with good reason!

Sefton Council are in the process of issuing legal proceedings against seven skateboarders, all under the age of 18, for breach of the bye-law act which prevents skateboarding in 4 designated areas:

1) Princess Diana Gardens (Town Gardens)
2) The Bandstand
3) Southport Pier
4) The Pier Forecourt.

Details of the bye-law were published in last months SSP Newsletter (still available on request from our My Space page where our e mail address can be found on our current newsletter) and the full text of the bye-law has been posted on the Southport Skateboarders Forum at www.solidsurf.co.uk.

Leaflets explaining the bye-law are also now available at ARCADE SPORTS.

Skating in the areas detailed above will compromise the future of skatepark facilities in Southport and could get you a £500 fine. DON’T DO IT!

Southport Support Group of the National Osteoporosis Society

Posted by Support Group of The National Osteoporosis Societ on July 2, 2007 6:01 PM

LOCAL MPs including Southport's John Pugh and West Lancashire's Rosie Cooper are being canvassed for support about new guidelines for the treatment of osteoporosis.
NICE - the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence - have recommended that only the drug 'alendronate' should be prescribed to patients at a high risk of breaking a bone due to osteoporosis for whom it is regarded as likely to be effective.
As a result of earlier protests NICE have now dropped their recommendation about treatment being determined by a patient's age.
But NOS chief executive, Claire Severgnini, said the appraisal by NICE needs to look beyond first line treatment. Hundreds of thousands of osteoporosis patients would not be able to take the proposed drug for various medical reasons.
The NOS is now calling on its 25,000 members to join the campaign around its NICE appeal and to appeal to their local MPs to support them.
Anyone wishing to know about the local group can call chairman Christine Rostron on 01704 575102
