June is National Osteoporosis Month and and the emphasis this year is on raising awareness of how men are affected by decreasing bone density problems.
The fact is that one in five men will suffer a fracture after the age of 50, up to 20% of spinal fractures and 30% of hip fractures occur in men.
Professor Roger M Francis says men are often surprised when they are diagnosed with osteoporosis as they usually associate the condition with women.
He goes on: "The likelihood of developing osteoporosis may be reduced by avoiding smoking and excess alcohol consumption and taking regular exercise. Men who develop broken bones after only minor injury should discuss the possibility of osteoporosis with their doctor."
