National Volunteers' Week

Posted by Southport Citizens Advice Bureau on June 19, 2007 2:04 PM |

Wednesday, 6 June saw the celebration of National Volunteers' Week ...
Bootle Town Hall was the setting for volunteers across the borough to receive well deserved recognition for the fantastic service they provide.

The weather couldn't have been any better; blue skies, warm; perhaps a little too warm for sitting in the majestic room within the stunning town hall which was to be the gathering for some 53 active volunteers from various charitable organisations. As admin assistant with the Southport CAB, I am proud to say that I was there to witness the marvellous achievements of our own volunteers and gain more of an insight into the work of other agencies. I honestly felt quite humble being among these people who devote so much of their time to helping others.

All volunteers were presented with a Certificate of Achievement which specified the number of hours' work each representative had contributed. To add to this auspicous occasion, these were handed out by the Mayor of Sefton who had earlier given a humourous and enlightening account of his own volunteering experiences. More humour was provided by our very own Val, who obviously carried away by the emotive experience, promptly placed a kiss on the Mayor's cheek whilst collecting her certificate! There certainly didn't appear to be any objection from Mr Hands who along with everyone else saw the funny side of Val's spontaneous gesture!

The awards ceremony was brought to a close by a sumptous buffet generously provided by the organisers, Volunteer Centre Sefton.

I left the occasion feeling extremely happy and proud to be part of the Southport CAB team and quite in awe of these people who devote so much of their time to providing such an excellent service.
