Problems driving on route to be examined

Posted by Digital Editor on May 8, 2007 3:02 PM |

A SPOKESWOMAN for Merseyside Ambulance Service confirmed this week that there has been a total of 27 road traffic accidents on the Coastal Road since January 1, 2006.
The scenic highway, which has previously been branded ‘the most dangerous road in the North West by Southport MP John Pugh, follows the old railway line which cuts through the sand dunes.

Councillor David Sumner commissioned a report in 2003 which recommended signs be put up to alert drivers to the number of deaths that had occurred on the road.
Cllr Sumner explained: “It’s tragic but I have asked in the past for people to drive carefully. For one reason or another it is a dangerous road.
“I will be asking again for signs to be put up reading ‘Drive carefully’.
Ainsdale’s Cllr Brenda Porter echoed Cllr Sumner’s sentiments, adding: “I don’t know the details of the accident at this stage. This is just so sad and our thoughts go to his family.
“I have been advised that a group has been set up to look at the Coastal Road and we have planned an earlier meeting now.The group will look at the problems that people have when driving on the Coastal Road and what can be done.”
Police are carrying out an investigation into the accident and officers are still appealing for witnesses to the collision.
l Anyone with information is asked to contact police traffic officers on the general appeal hotline on 0151-777 5730.
