Prince's Trust Needs Volunteers with a Head for Business

Posted by The Prince's Trust on May 10, 2007 12:06 PM |

Southport based business people are being urged to become mentors to young entrepreneurs keen to kick start their careers.

The Prince’s Trust is the largest national youth charity and part of its work supports young people aged between 18 and 30 who have no other means of raising the capital they need to set up their own businesses.

The Trust also provides support for the first three years of trading including assigning them with a volunteer Business Mentor who meets with them regularly to provide ideas, a sounding board and support. More than 58% of new businesses helped by the charity are still trading into their third year and The Prince’s Trust puts this success down to the extra support from expert staff and the provision of a volunteer mentor.

Sefton has been an area of real growth for new business and this has meant that the demand for volunteer mentors in this area is out stripping supply. Volunteers Co-ordinator, Liz Warmisham is looking to recruit at least ten new volunteer business mentors to meet this growing need and is looking for people with business experience and good communication skills to give around three hours per month to help a young entrepreneur in this are to succeed. Anyone interested should call her on 0151 7943197.

One such volunteer is Caroline Spencer who runs Ainsdale Health & Fitness on Liverpool Road, Ainsdale, Caroline said: “I am a recent volunteer recruit and have received training and support to become a mentor for The Prince’s Trust. It is a great opportunity to use my skills to help someone succeed and is a really rewarding volunteer role.”

Our slogan for the gym is " We’re small & friendly not big & trendy" and being a Trust volunteer is a bit like that too – it is much more important to be approachable and a good listener than to have all the answers. Ainsdale Health & Fitness keeps me really busy as we offer holistic therapies, coaching and the services of an expert beautician as well as air conditioned gym and exercise classes, but the volunteering only takes a few hours a month and so it is really easy to fit it in.”
