On the final evening of the winter season, Bob Platt, Formby chess club's first team captain, sealed his eleventh club championship against Mike Barrett, the club's second team captain.
Mike Barrett could not match his endeavours in the semi-final when he defeated former club champion and tournament secretary, Mike Haslinger, in a fifteen minute game after two exciting drawn games.
This completes a very successful season for Bob, after he had captained the first team to promotion back to the First Division of the Merseyside Chess League after a two year absence.
Kevin Howard defeated Dave Cotterell in the Challengers Final, to retain that trophy for a second year.
Formby Chess Club meet in the Royal Hotel, Liverpool Road, Formby for the summer season, on Tuesday nights starting at 7.30 pm.
