A real show of horse power at working day

Posted by Digital Editor on May 8, 2007 1:44 PM |

A VISION of times past was seen in West Lancashire at the weekend when dozens of heavy horses appeared on farmland in place of tractors.
The event at Clieves Hills, Aughton, was a ‘spring working day’ where the Northern Counties Heavy Horse Working Society invited friends, farmers, and fellow horse fanciers, from up and down the country to come and take part.

John Roy Prescott allowed his field at Gores Farm to be ploughed for a good cause.
He said: “Spring working day is a day where we work the land with horses like we used to. We do everything the old way, cultivating, harrowing, sowing corn and setting spuds.
“It was beautiful day, showing the children and anyone who came along things that they’ve probably never seen.
“The weather was beautiful and it’s quite a view from up there.
“There were 40-odd horses. People come all the way from Devon. We help with the fuel expenses they spend getting here. If they didn’t come we wouldn’t have such a great day! We all love it. Just like people love football, we love horses. It wouldn’t do to be all the same.”
