Formby Chess Club move to new club night
Posted by Formby Chess Club on June 15, 2009 10:39 AM
President and Club Champion Phil Fisher welcomes all members and prospective members to the Ravenmeols Community Centre on Tuesday September 1st at 1945 for a 2000 start.
Traditionally the evening consists of a handicap tournament during which the higher the team that you play for the less time you have on the clock.
It is normally run over about five rounds and Phil provides prizes for the winners of the tournament. Members need to note the new club night (Tuesdays).
Phil has been particularly active in the summer seaon with a brave performance in the South Lakes Congress Open section .
No doubt inspired by Formby's top player International Grandmaster Stewart Haslinger, who treated members of the club to a training session, the players are fired up ready for another successful season, after both the first and third teams winning their respective divisions in the Merseyside League.
So if you are already a member or may want to join, come along and join in the fun. Until September the club meet on Tuesday evenings at the Royal Hotel, Liverpool Road, Formby from about 1930.

In March President Margaret Davies organised an Irish Night at Southport Masonic Hall in aid of local charity 'Light For Life'.Around 75 guests came along to raise money for the charity which supports over 2000 Southport residents who become homeless each year.Entertainment was courtesy of the Alexander Strange School of Irish Dance. After a traditional Irish Dinner guests danced to music provided by the Gallimaufrey Ceilidh Band.
The money from the Irish Evening was then added to the total collected through the year. The Club then had the pleasant task of deciding which local charities should benefit and subsequently representatives were invited to a 'Cheque Presentation Evening'. The latter included Ken Jones of 'The Christmas Shelter', Greta Morphet of 'Light For Life', Val Martyn Beck of Macmillan Nurses, Jan Reagan of 'The KGV Vulnerable Students Fund', Brian Halliwell of Queenscourt Hospice, James Ashton of 'Merefield Re-United and Alexander Strange of 'The Academy of Irish Dance'.
On April 26th President Margaret handed over title to President Elect Gillian Ribis at the 77th Charter Luncheon. This was held at The Ramada Hotel and pre-lunch entertainment was provided by the Saint Ambrose Barlow Steel Band. Guests included President of SI South Lancashire Bernadette Platt and the Rev Canon Rod Garner. In her speech President Margaret reflected on her year and she wished Gillian every success in her year.
President Gillian has alredy informed the Club of some speakers she has booked and events she is planning. The latter range from a Charity Auction to a trip to the Champagne Region of France! More news in the Autumn.
